GENERAL QUESTIONS
What is SFO’s circulation?
For the monthly magazine, SFO has a monthly circulation of approximately 120,000.

Can I have a PDF of my story?
You can download your article from the e-magazine as a PDF. However, the PDF is intended for your personal use only and is not to be distributed to others or posted on websites. The best way to share your article with others is to use the e-mail function in the e-magazine toolbar or send to others the URL for the article on SFO’s website. You may also post this link on your website.

Can I have a link of my story?
Yes. The magazine will be delivered as a link, and we encourage you to share the link to your story with your friends, family, followers and associates.

Can I put a link on my own website?
Yes. We encourage you to share a link to your article with anyone who visits your Web page.

CONTENT QUESTIONS
What voice should I use when writing my article?
Preferably, the article should be written in third person (“the trader,” “he or she”). However, if your story is more of a how-to or an instructive piece, it might be more appropriate to use the second person (“you”) at times. Use your best judgment but make sure that you are consistent throughout.

In what format do you need the charts?
The charts should be in a JPEG format. Most charts can be converted to JPEGs by copying and pasting them into a Paint or similar document, clicking “Save As” and selecting JPEG in the “Save as Type” box. Be sure to save the charts as high-resolution files (300 dpi or greater at a 4 in. x 6 in. size).

Can I include my firm/website name in the text of the story?
If this information is relevant to your topic, this can be included in the text. Otherwise, you may include this information in your biography, which will appear at the end of the story. Keep in mind that the electronic format allows us to include live links to any of your websites, blogs, Facebook or Twitter pages, etc. that you wish to include.

How advanced are SFO readers/traders?
SFO reaches a wide range of readers, with many at the beginning to intermediate trading level due to our educational mission. However, feel free to target your article to more advanced traders as well.

E-MAGAZINE QUESTIONS
What should I know about writing for an electronic format?
You can find a list of helpful tips for online writing at e-Magazine Writing Tips.

Can I include more than three charts with the e-magazine format?
Because the e-magazine mirrors the structure of our print magazine, there is still only room for three charts to run within your story’s layout. Additional charts may be included on our website. You can, however, be able to include links to supplementary materials and resources that you think will be useful for our readers.

Will the content of my articles have to change?
No. Our mission of educating the individual, retail trader has not changed. We do, however, hope to grow our international audience, so we will be more welcoming of articles with a global approach.

How will this change affect my word count requirements?
People read materials differently on screen than they do in print. Generally, they have a lower attention span for lengthy bodies of text and seek more visual elements, such as lists, sidebars and graphics. We have also enlarged the size of our typeface to make on-screen viewing more accessible.

This means that articles need to be shorter. However, this does not mean that quality content should be sacrificed. We will work with you to write with precision and attention to visual elements. For a few tips for writing for the an e-magazine, see e-Magazine Writing Tips.

Will search engines have access to my article?
Yes. We post your article in two formats: the complete e-magazine and as a separate text and chart Web page on SFOmag.com. Search engines have access to both.

Does my article reach the same audience in the e-magazine format as it did in print?
Yes. Our subscriber base is the same, and the e-magazine format makes it readily available to more readers. In addition, we want to grow our readership outside of the U.S. now that we are not restricted in our distribution by postal regulations and costs.
